Organizations from businesses to churches are turning to sites like Facebook to spread the gospel

GREENFIELD – Suzy Zeller thought it would be “creepy” to market her Greenfield wedding shop on Facebook, thinking that the popular social networking Web site was just for teens and 20-somethings. Little did she know.
“I realized that people in my age group were on there as much as anybody else,” Zeller said. “Everybody is on there.”
With a newfound zeal, Zeller created a Facebook page for My Enchanted Wedding Shop. Word about the page spread like wildfire without Zeller even realizing it; three weeks later, she returned to her page to discover a flurry of unanswered postings.
In the span of a few months, the page has turned into an interactive hub for local brides. Forty-seven people had signed up as “fans” as of Friday morning, many of them former customers recommending the business.
“Thank you,” writes Kristin in a posting. “I have received all kinds of compliments on the dress, and my groom absolutely loved it!”
Zeller is just one example of a large and growing number of people in the community – from businesspeople to church leaders to prominent local officials – who use social networking applications like Facebook and Twitter to connect with others. Some are looking to find new customers or expand the reach of their message, while others are simply looking to make new friends or locate people with similar interests.
